Origins of the Black Health Coalition of Greater Kenosha
In 2006, the Kenosha County Division of Health applied and received a Minority Health Grant to address the persistent health disparities that existed in the African American community. This grant proposal was community driven, neighborhood-based, and addressed primary prevention and health promotion, with the intent that the Black Health Coalition would serve as a vehicle for improving health outcomes in the African American community.
The Black Health Coalition of Greater Kenosha, Inc. operates using two overarching principles of EQUITY and EMPOWERMENT.
Equity means the quality of being fair or impartial; fairness. Though we may rely on resources outside our community, we must maintain the right to tell those who work with us how we want things to be done.
Empowerment means to give power or authority to; we as a community have the skills, knowledge and access to sufficient resources to do it ourselves.
